Sad news - the American artist Cy Twombly passed away two days ago at his home in Italy, at the age of 83. The master of the "scribble", graffiti style art, Twombly was somewhat of an anomaly among his peers in the post-war era. Although many artists of the time were also moving away from Abstract Expressionism, Twombly further distanced himself through his simplified lines, colors and his lifestyle. As New York was shifting as the cultural center of art, Twombly was traveling to and eventually settled in Europe, living a life outside of the limelight. Here and here are some well written articles about this dynamic artist.
1962
Oil, pencil, and crayon on canvas
1967
Etching and aquatint
2001
Synthetic polymer paint, crayon, and
cut-and-pasted paper on paper
